AvMed Physicians

No PCP Designation and No Referrals
State of Florida employees can now visit any doctor in the AvMed Health Plans network without choosing a Primary Care Physician (PCP) first. As always, with AvMed Open Access there are no referrals required for specialist visits.

Although a PCP, or family physician, is not required, AvMed encourages all members to consult a family physician because he or she should be familiar with your medical history and can best coordinate your medical care with specialists and other health care providers.

Primary Care Physicians are identified in this directory by these specialties. The first time you call a doctor’s office, be sure to ask what age groups the doctor sees.

        • Family Practice – for all family members
        • General Practice – for all family members
        • Internal Medicine – for adults
        • Obstetrics/Gynecology – for women and adolescent girls
        • Pediatrics – for children

Medical Excellence
AvMed considers Board Certification a significant credential in evaluating our physicians. Our Physicians complete advanced training in an approved hospital residency and/or fellowship program. Additional requirements, as established by each specialty board, must be met for a physician to become Board Certified. Our physicians are identified within this directory with a filled diamond for "Board Certified".

AvMed is committed to quality health care. We have a broad network of physicians who also work hard to keep you healthy. AvMed contracts with physicians who are in private practice and see AvMed members within certain time frames, depending upon the member's condition. They also agree to certain standards of care for our members in regards to wait times and accessibility. To view AvMed's standards, choose a link below:

Remember, for after-hours, non-emergency care, you can use an Urgent Care Center. These centers are more convenient than emergency rooms and they help keep emergency rooms ready for serious emergencies. Urgent Care Centers are listed in this directory. It is a good idea to locate those near you and post that information along with you doctor’s information in a handy place.

Minimal Authorization Requirements
Routine services do not require prior notice or authorization. The following services do require prior authorization: all inpatient care, observation care, skilled nursing facility, hospice, dialysis, all transplant services and certain covered drugs including injectables. Should you have any questions, please contact AvMed’s Member Services Department at 1-800-882-8633.
